When families are faced with daily realities of parenting children with special needs it can be helpful to speak to another parent of a child with similar experiences to talk about the joys, challenges and concerns they face in raising their child. We know that parents, through their shared experiences, can give each other the support and practical knowledge that even the most compassionate service providers cannot.
For this reason the Family Support Network provides families faced with special health care, behavioral or physical needs with emotional support and information from other families with similar life experiences. Some desire to learn of available resources, services or education concerning their child's development. Our staff and trained support parents can provide emotional and practical support based on their own experience for the family as well as education for the community. All of our services are held in confidence and are free of charge. These special needs may include:
- premature birth
- physical, mental or developmental disabilities
- hearing or visual impairment
- chronic illness
- other health or learning related disorders
Self referrals can be made by the parent (biological, foster, adoptive, grandparent, etc.) for our services or a family member, friend, or professional may refer a family with the family's permission.
Family Support Network has independent programs across North Carolina and can offer referrals and information to other such programs statewide and nationally.
